Apra Announce Inaugural Maioha Award
The winner of the first ever APRA Maioha award for Maori Songwriting is Ngahiwi Apanui with “Wharikihia”.
The award was presented at the exclusive APRA Silver Scroll Award evening at Auckland’s Town Hall on Tuesday night.
The other two finalists were
Writer Song Mahinarangi Tocker Kei Hea Koe
Jackie Tiekiwhare Hemmingsen Nga Tohu O Te Waa by Jackie Hemmingsen/Tuahine
The name Maioha embraces creativity and translates as “a spontaneous composition which reflects a deep emotional outpouring”. The anonymous panel of judges were looking for lyrics, which were correct in composition, pronunciation and expression of meaning. The music had to match the kaupapa and the lyrics and melody had to travel together. They agreed that the winning song contained all these elements.
“The award came about through representations from the Maori Music Industry Coalition and recognises the strength and importance of contemporary Maori music in New Zealand,” says Arthur Baysting, APRA Writer/Director.
The Maioha award was designed and crafted by George Nuku.
Four other awards presented on the night were the APRA Silver Scroll Award – Nesian Mystik “For the People”
The Most Performed Work In NZ Award – Goldenhorse “Maybe Tomorrow”
The Most Performed Work Overseas Award – Neil Finn ‘Don’t Dream its Over”
and the SOUNZ Contemporary Award – Gillian Whitehead ‘Alice’.
