Return to Sender - Donald Buglass and Sharyn Young
A unique representation of communication’s intricate layers
Trained in different cities in Australia, in different fields of Art and living in different islands of New Zealand
these two artists explore communication by working on the same paintings via postage.
"Return to Sender" is a body of work returned, knocked, docked, sanded, banded, layered and repainted the works become a
tapestry of voice, thought and intent. The thoughts and feelings of artists and friends are woven together.
Like most human dialogue the paintings are modified and reworked in a continual process of searching for the best ways
to express knowledge, love and truth.
There ís more to friendship and art than meets the eye.
Land by the Sea - Maxwell Marshall
This is Island Bay Artist Maxwell Marshall, first exhibition since completing his Diploma in Fine Art at Aoraki
Polytechnic in Timaru.
His paintings capture, his love of the sea environment, a love he developed while spending time as a volunteer
lifeguard.
“In my painting I hope to create a reality within the work, by appreciating underlying form within the subject” said
Maxwell Marshall
Paintings and Tapestries - Matthew Squire
Self taught artist Matthew Squire’s quirky small paintings and tapestries celebrate scenes in and about Wellington, from
the Cuba Street Bucket Fountain to Oriental Bay. Other pieces in the exhibitions explore New Zealand's flora and fauna.
Matthew’s work has a different perspective to them, which can only be described as Squire Style. What else can you
expect from a guy who is very comfortable making tapestries on the bus or train or while having a beer at the local.
Matthew must be hitting the right strokes of stitches as his gems can be found in Tim Walker’s (The Dowse’s Director)
private art collection.
Painting without Paint – Journey into Process Art - Nina Larisch-Haider
German born Wellingtonian Nina Larisch-Haider has called New Zealand home since 1999.
Nina has been studying the Master Class of Art and Creativity at the Learning Connection, Island Bay this year. The body
of work that she is exhibiting in Painting without Paint – Journey into Process Art is a direct result of her studies
there.
Nina works with oil crayons, acrylics and inks, but also has been integrating materials of all kinds, onto the canvas,
using them out of their normal context and bringing them into a new context. She also cuts and pierces the canvas to
create a new space and conquers the canvas in a new way. Both processes allow Nina to paint without paint.
Her formal training as a Psychotherapist, Naturopath and Healer are evident in her works, being a free spirit she
doesn’t want to limit herself. When speaking about her works she defines them as creations rather than artworks because
the word art is very loaded with definitions, values and expectations. For Nina “Creating is for me being part of
something bigger than me, independent if I write, paint or create with different materials.”
Interiors and People - Chris Edmonds
Wellington artist Chris Edmond’s interior paintings capture wonderfully askew perspectives. Is Life Imitating Art or Art
Imitating Life? He magically combines paint washes with solid paintwork in his paintings. Which gives audiences a seat
to view life, through a different window.
Colour is another strong element in Chris’s work he describes his work as ”Abstract with colourfulness I like to use
shapes, colour and abstract forms.”
