Cheeky Photo Wins Rugby Prize
Mark Dwyer, the Chief Photographer of Taranaki Newspapers, has won
Canterbury of New Zealand's NPC photography competition with his stunning
picture of Wellington centre Ma'a Nonu tackling a streaker during their
clash with Taranaki in New Plymouth.
The photo was taken on 20 September and appeared in The Daily News with the
headline 'When rude boy meets rugby'. The photo also appeared in several
other newspapers, including The Dominion Post which carried the headline
'Cheek to cheek'.
Mark Dwyer said he just happened to be in the right place at the right time
and was pleased he captured the image rather than downing tools to have a
guffaw at the surprise on-field activity.
"I was following the streaker with my camera lens, when out of nowhere Ma'a
Nonu tackled him," he said. "The Wellington reserves on the bench were
cheering him on...it was a real laugh!'
The competition was open to all New Zealand photographers and related
specifically to published NPC photographs. Mark wins $500 worth of
Canterbury apparel for his winning effort.
