The Dunedin productions of “H.M.S. Pinafore” and “The Pirates of Penzance”, opening at Labour Weekend 2003, feature the third and fourth Gilbert and Sullivan operas - each with a nautical theme - originally performed in 1878 and 1879-80. This is the second in a series of annual production seasons to be staged by the Really Authentic Gilbert and Sullivan Performance Trust between 2002 and 2012. The Trust’s novel project is to present all the “Savoy” operas in historic sequence and in respectful but imaginative productions which attain the highest artistic level that can be managed. In September 2002, the Trust launched its cycle with enthusiastically received performances of “Trial By Jury” and “The Sorcerer”.
