Fun, celebrations and Sir Edmund Hillary launch 2003 Variety Mini BASH
Colour, celebration, kids, celebrities and crazy cars will all be at the launch of the 2003 Variety Mini BASH on Friday
10 October from 7.30am at the Auckland War Memorial Museum.
And all Aucklanders are invited to the launch as over 30 vehicles with more than 150 people set out to bring sunshine,
laughter and a little help to the children of Northland.
“We are thrilled with the opportunity to start the Mini BASH at the Auckland War Memorial Museum,” says Variety BASH
Director Jill Glazewski. “The launch will be very visual with loads of colour, music and fun.”
One of the highlights of the event this year is the presence of Sir Edmund Hillary at the launch. He will set off the
official start and lead the convoy of vehicles out of the Auckland Museum and through the city to SH1. The BASH vehicles
will travel out of the Domain on to Parnell Road, down Parnell Rise, along Beach Road and Customs Street to Lower Albert
Street, along Quay Street and up Fanshaw Street on to the Northern motorway.
“We would like to see Aucklanders lining the city streets and sending us on our way as we are lead by Sir Edmund and
Lady Hillary in their red Mini Cooper,” says Jill.
“In the year celebrating his 50th anniversary of conquering Mt Everest and all that Sir Edmund Hillary has done for
children internationally, we feel there is no better person to launch the Mini BASH in the name of helping New Zealand
children,” says Jill.

The 2003 Variety Mini BASH will run from Friday 10 to Sunday 12 October 2003 and will travel from Auckland through
Silverdale, Whangarei, Omapere, Kaikohe, Kerikeri and Dargaville and will make some out-of-the-way stops along the way.
This year the Mini BASH will distribute over $70,000 to the Northland communities including a ‘Sunshine Coach’ sponsored
by New Zealand Women’s Weekly which will go to Opononi Area School.
