The month at a glance:
Spring is here and many exciting events and exhibitions are coming to Te Papa this September. Kiri's Dresses - A glimpse into a Diva's wardrobe takes you on a captivating journey through the memories of Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, New Zealand's famous soprano, via her amazing dresses and costumes. You can also see free screenings of Dame Kiri starring in a film of Mozart's famous opera, Don Giovanni. On September 28 you can enjoy the four-part South Bank Show documentary on Dame Kiri's life. And if you like live opera, join some emerging and established opera names for the annual NBR New Zealand Opera at Te Papa. The stunning Japonism in Fashion exhibition has only been shown in Paris, New York and Tokyo before Te Papa. Take this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see dresses by the world's greatest fashion designers. But be quick - Japonism in Fashion closes on October 5.
Fashion buffs must see Japanese Fashion Now, a free catwalk show presented by Marilyn Sainty that previews the Autumn/Winter 2003/2004 collections of contemporary Japanese designers Commes des Garçons and Junya Watanabe.Make sure you take the whole family to the recently opened exhibition Wings Nature's flying machines / Hua rere a te taiao. Learn the secrets of flight in the natural world. Wings is crammed with things to see and do, and full of interesting facts. For example, bartailed godwits travel non-stop from Alaska and Eastern Siberia to New Zealand - making the 11,000-kilometre journey in only 100 hours! In mid-September, the school holidays begin, and Te Papa's Discovery Centres are always a hit. Read on to find out more about these events and many others!

Kiri's Dresses exhibition opens!
11am-12 noon: Weave a cool kete (basket). Te Huka ä Tai, Level 4. Cost $2. 12 noon-1pm: Opera on the Marae. Wellington Tenor James Rodgers performs a selection of arias, accompanied by Emily Mair. A screening of the film version of Mozart's famous opera, starring Dame Kiri Te Kanawa. Sung in Italian with English subtitles. Thanks to the New Zealand Opera Society (Inc). Soundings Theatre, Level 2. Free entry. 1pm-2pm: Latin Day. Experience a South American styled celebration of poetry, song, and dance. The Marae, Level 4. Free entry.

11am-12 noon: Make a loopy leaping weta. NatureSpace, Level 2. Cost $2. 12.30pm-2.30pm: The NBR New Zealand Opera Day. This annual event is a fabulous showcase of the extraordinary operatic talent we have in New Zealand. Join Bruce Greenfield, Head of Music at the NBR New Zealand Opera company, as well as the PricewaterhouseCoopers Dame Malvina Major Emerging Artists, and a very special guest, the brilliant singer Helen Medlyn, for a look into the world of opera. 6pm-7pm: 'From Angels to Pigeongrams - Science meets Fiction.' Award-winning author Elizabeth Knox and Te Papa's distinguished bird scientist Sandy Bartle discuss their fascination with the idea and the actuality of winged messengers. Elizabeth Knox will be available for a book signing in Te Papa Store afterwards. Soundings Theatre, Level 2. Free entry.

11am-12 noon: Make a dancing taniwha. Te Huka ä Tai, Level 4. Cost $2. 12 noon & 2pm: Fly-By-Wire floortalks. Fly By Wire, in Paekakariki, is the fastest adventure ride in the world, as well as the first pilot-controlled aeronautical ride. Its kiwi creator, Neil Harrap, brings one of his planes to Te Papa, along with flight simulation video clips, and talks about this unique local invention. Wellington Foyer, Level 2. Free entry. 7.30pm-8.55pm: Dance Screen 2002 - Best of Screen Choreography. New Zealand Premiere of the film showing the finalists of the best choreography section in the international Dance Screen competition. Followed by a short discussion. Pacific Rim: Ann Robinson's glass
An exhibition of over twenty stunning glass works by acclaimed New Zealand artist Ann Robinson. Until 5 October 2003. Free entry.
Aainaa: reflections through Indian weddings
Created by Te Papa in partnership with New Zealand Indian communities, this exhibition explores the wedding ritual to show both traditional and modern experiences of marriage. Until 2004. Free entry.
Tühoe: children of the mist
Discover the early stories of the Tühoe iwi (tribe) and their whakapapa (genealogy), learn about Te Urewera, the sacred forest, find out about key figures and events in Tühoe's proud history, and gain an insight into Tühoe today. Free entry.
From Woodblocks to Comics: the Japanese impression A small exhibition featuring Japanese ukiyo-e prints, prints and watercolours by European artists, and Manga (Japanese comics). Until January 2004. Free entry.
