Auckland Writers and Readers Festival Creative Directors Peter Wells and Stephanie Johnson are delighted to announce
that Pulitzer-prize winning US author Annie Proulx has accepted their invitation to speak at a one-off event in Auckland
next month.
She will discuss her work and life with Dr Brian Edwards of Edwards at Large (TV1), at the Dorothy Winstone Centre,
Auckland Girls’ Grammar on Wednesday 10th September from 8.00pm.

Annie Proulx is making a special visit to New Zealand, which she loves, after an appearance at the Melbourne Writers’
Festival.
Proulx published her first novel at the age of 58 after many years as a freelance journalist writing about a wide range
of subjects. She is the author of the novels Postcards, The Shipping News and Accordion Crimes, as well as the highly
acclaimed short-story collections Heart Songs and Close Range.
Perhaps best known for the phenomenally successful The Shipping News, for which she won the Pulitzer Prize, the US
National Book Award and the Irish Times International Fiction Prize, Annie Proulx is regarded as one of the most
intriguing authors of our time. “I still don’t think of myself as a writer, I think of myself as a reader. I never
entertained thoughts of becoming a writer. It sort of happened …”
Her latest novel That Old Ace in the Hole, a “sociological study of the panhandle”, will be available in paperback at
the event, where Annie Proulx will sign books at the Festival Bookstall.
