Art Centre Announces First Artists In Residence
During July the sound of mallets striking chisels will join the sound of trains passing by in the Dunedin Railway
Station when the Cleveland Living Arts Centre, located on the first floor of the station, plays host to the first in a
series of ‘artists in residence’.
The graduates of the two year whakairo rakau (wood carving) course will be exhibiting traditional and contemporary Maori
art.
The Akona Te Ranagatahi – Whakairo Rakau exhibition runs from July 11 until 25 July.
Created under the tutelage of Ngai Tahu artist James York, works exhibited will include large free standing Tekoteko
(figures), Poupou (wall panels), and Taiaha (weapons)
Students will be carving in the centre during the exhibition, with some works for sale. Talks and demonstrations are
also being scheduled.
Art Centre hours are Mon – Friday, 10am -4pm; admission is free.
The series continues in November when Heather Jennings, a pole lathe turner and specialist spoon maker, and Jane
Pearce, who creates sculptural basketry, work in the centre from 25 November until 7 December.
