470 European Sailing Championship Concludes Just As It Began - With No Racing
470 European Championship
6 - 16th July
Brest, France The only consistent factor in the 470 European Championships was a lack of breeze. With the temperature soaring into the mid 30's the sailors sat around the boat park on the last day of the regatta waiting for any sign of the conditions improving but as the afternoon dragged on it became evident that no racing was to take place.
Current World Champion's Simon Cooke and Peter Nicholas (Kohimarama Yacht Club) needed to sail the final two scheduled races to qualify for another drop and cancel out a 33rd placing they obtained while racing in the fickle breeze, their final result of 10th place in the 112 competitor fleet was not a true representation of their overall performance which included two bullets and a second placing over the 7 races sailed.
Andrew Brown and Jamie Hunt (Naval Point Yacht Club) were the second placing New Zealanders finishing the regatta in 30th place, with three top 10 finishes amongst their results.
Kohimarama sailors Geoff Woolley and Mark Overington finished in 85th pl In the women's fleet Shelley Hesson and Linda Dickson (Mt Pleasant/Nelson) finished in the top half of fleet in 19th place at the end of the 8 race series.
