Top New Zealand Kartsport Racer On Tv Tomorrow
The country's top KartSport driver, 18-year-old Aucklander Wade Cunningham, will give viewers an insight into the world of professional Karting in Europe on TV1's Sportsfix programme tomorrow afternoon (Saturday July 11).
Two-time CIK Trophy of New Zealand winner, and 2001 Asia-Pacific Senior ICA champion Cunningham has been driving for Italian manufacturer CRG's works team for the past two years and is widely regarded in Europe as one of the brightest hopes on the International scene.
At the first round of this year's European championships at Angerville in France (with no multi-round 'World' championship as such the European championship is the de facto World one) Cunningham finished 13th overall and at the second round at the Mika Salo circuit in Finland he got as high as 4th in the heats before engine problems blunted his charge.
The young Aucklander is back home for a short break before heading to Australia to compete for the CRG team in a round of the 2003 Australian CIK Championship.
He will then fly back to Europe to prepare for the next round of the 2003 European Championships.
By racing Karts in Europe Cunningham is following in some very illustrious footsteps. Formula One legends Alan Prost and Ayrton Senna both started their careers in Karts, and competed in the European championship, as did current Formula 1 drivers Kimi Raikkonen, Jenson Button, Jarno Trulli and Giancarlo Fisicella.
