Bastille Day Celebrations at Auckland Museum!
Bastille Day is a National Holiday in France celebrating the storming of the Bastille, a French prison, on July 14 in
1789. This was the start of the French Revolution and became a symbol of historical dimension; proof that power resided
with the people and not the monarchy.
Auckland Museum, in association with Alliance Française d’Auckland, will be celebrating this significant day in French
history for the first time with a Living Treasures Day of themed events and celebrations on Sunday 13 July.
Highlights include talks about French social history, Bastille Day, and Paul Gauguin the French artist who spent his
final years in the Pacific, presented by current and past presidents of Alliance Française d’Auckland.
French antiques will be on display along with the opportunity to talk to antique specialists, including Chrystelle Baran
of Baron de Bordeax, importers of 17th, 18th and 19th Century French furniture, and Martin Horspool from Renaissance
London, specialists in French fireplaces.
Live French music will be provided by the fabulous French Toast.

Admission to this Living Treasures Day is by usual donation, children are free.
