Special Olympian Provides Big Lift At World Summer Games
Power lifter Brett Sutherland (Invercargill) has won gold and three silvers, lifting 372.5kgs (combination of Bench, deadlift & squat) – over four times his own body weight, contributing four of New Zealand’s 11 medals won overnight.
Thanks to Brett’s effort and the rest of the winning athletes, New Zealand now holds 30 medals and six personal bests, with four more days of competition to go.
Special Olympics Executive Director and Head of Delegation for the Games, Chris Hooper says it’s hard to resist celebrating right now, but there are four intense more days to focus on.
“The team is having an absolute ball over here, the atmosphere amongst the team is electric at the moment. We’re meeting athletes and their family and friends from around the world including the Caribbean, France, Botswana and the Middle East,” he said.
Other medal winners from yesterday are bocce players Justin Ashton and George Taylor who both won bronze in their individual events, and equestrian athletes Maria Dixon – silver - and James Farrell, who received his second gold of The Games. The tenpin team kept up it’s winning streak with pairs Helen Coring & Anne Fairhurst receiving a silver in their competition and Steven James & Robert McElwee and Mandy Sandbrook & Lynley North scoring bronze each.
