Top Stylists To Be Joined On Stage By Top Fashion Designer
This year's Wella YPS national final on June 21 will not only showcase the talent of New Zealand's young hairstylists but the unique style of top local fashion designer Natalija Kucija.
As an added attraction of the annual awards' event, Natalija will stage a fashion show featuring her 2003 Winter Collection and a preview of her 2003 Summer Collection. She will also judge the Wella YPS 2003 fashion excellence section of the awards.
The Wella YPS Awards, or Young Protégé Scholarship Awards, are New Zealand's only live company run competition for the hairdressing industry's future style gurus and are open to hairdressers aged 22 years or under.
"We feel very privileged to be able feature Natalija and her fabulous work at the 2003 Wella YPS Awards final as she clearly demonstrates creativity, imagination, skill and talent and that's what the awards are all about," says Wella New Zealand's national sales manager, Mike Beauchamp.
"The Wella YPS Award allows the top up-and-coming talent in the hairdressing arena and that talent will be perfectly complemented by Natalija's own skill, flair and inspiration."
Twenty-four regional winners will compete live in the awards event at The ASB Club Lounge Eden Park, for a prize package including worldwide travel and the much coveted Wella YPS 2003 trophy and certificate. Competitors have 45 minutes to create their masterpieces and are judged on the cut, style and finish and the total look.
Colouring is done before the event at Wella's head office and judging takes place live, on the spot, at the final. Two 'runners-up, the 'top colourist' and 'design showing fashion excellence' will also be chosen at the national final.
Editor's Note: Natalija Kucija opened her first store four years ago and had international acclaim following a show at Australian Fashion Week.
Now aged 29, Natalija was making all her own clothes by the age of 12 and after finishing school did a short fashion course in Auckland before moving to Wellington to study for three years.
After graduation she worked for a fashion chain then put together a small range that was sold through Karen Walker stores. Natalija then opened her own retail outlet.
Her fashions have graced the cover of Fashion Quarterly twice in the past year and Natalija's look for winter is inspired by French actress Catherine Deneuve and her role as Severine in the 1967 film Belle du Jour.
