Quills By Doug Wright Directed by Karen Lamb
A tale of Sex, Deceit and Manipulation
Quills is set in the vortex of a 19th century France Asylum. A Black Comedy, Quills thrives on sex, deceit and manipulation. Doug Wright’s remarkable work forcefully challenges themes of censorship, power, and extreme measures of rehabilitation.
Quills, is a pretext for deranged creativity, set in the Charenton Asylum. Wright’s play follows the journey of a most familiar inmate, The Marquis de Sade, a depraved author, and with the help of a laundry maid smuggles his erotic tales to the outside world.
The Marquis de Sade, although confined, finds freedom through vigorous forms of defiance, which leads into shocking consequences.
This play has extremes in its most potent form, and as grotesquerie mounts on grotesquerie, the plays passages acquire an almost absurdist tone, that leaves even the inmates speechless.
With the help of SmokefreeArts, The Quills co-operative will be Toi Whakaari’s most exciting production of the year. And from years of success from previous Toi Whakaari co-ops, Quills is sure to follow their lead.
