Karen Walker To Feature In International Art Exhibition
Leading New Zealand fashion designer Karen Walker will feature in an exclusive international art and fashion exhibition showcasing 20 of the world’s top designers, starting Monday 27 April.
The Fashion: The Greatest Show on Earth exhibition at Seattle’s Bellevue Art Museum also includes pieces by industry heavyweights Alexander McQueen of Givenchy, John Galliano of Christian Dior and Issey Miyake.
The exhibition looks at how designers have created a new form of performance art in runway shows.
Walker’s involvement stems from a groundbreaking runway show she put on at the Australian Fashion Week 2000. Showing a collection titled ‘Etiquette’, which focused on rule-breaking and freedom of choice, Walker presented spectators with the chance to select their own music – or silence – by using personal CD players.
Karen Walker says she is delighted to be involved in the Seattle exhibition. “The most important thing for us is originality - strong ideas and concepts,” she says. “The presentation of a collection is an integral part of communicating the collection’s concept. Shows for us aren’t about just sending models down a runway, nor are they about silly gimmicks, they’re about originality and communicating the collection’s idea.”
Now internationally recognised as a designer, Walker’s clothes can be found in around 100 fashion stores around the world and are worn by celebrities such as Madonna, Shirley Manson and Cate Blanchett.
The exhibition will run until August 31, before travelling to other international venues.
