Swell times in NZ
It seems like ages since our last monthly newsletter...I guess it was a month ago! There has been heaps of surf all over the country so you should of scored something in the last month. Hey did you here about last Sunday Raglan went off with solid 6 foot plus peaks and the local crew absolutely shredding it to the max. Yes we will probably call last Sunday "Big Sunday" as there were several places with sizeable surf.
Just to name a couple: Gisborne 4-6 feet, Wairarapa the same just right for the Wellington Champs; Kaikoura 6-8 feet of swell with Maungamanu 6 foot for the Longboard Classic; Chistchurch who I might add has suffered from terminal flatness this summer was, wait for it 6-8 feet. Last but not least down Dunedin way and not to be out done, St Clair had a rising south swell of 4-6 feet with Aramoana solid 4-6 feet northeast swell. On the other coast we had New Plymouth going off with 6-8 feet down the coast and town a more easy to handle 4-5 feet.
Contest wise in the last month we have had the Gisborne Surfing New Zealand Pro. This was taken out by our resident Open Mens Champ Daniel Kereopa. The South Island Longboard Classic was won by Ian Bell & Nicky Murden in the mens & womens open respectively.

Oakley/ASL Big Wave Awards
Did you see TV1 News last night? New Zealand surfer Doug Young was announced first runner-up at the Australasian Big Wave Awards presented on Australias Gold Coast at the weekend.
The award was presented at the ASL Surf Industry Ball 2003 at Jupiters Casino and was judged on the biggest wave caught in Australian or New Zealand waters over an eight-month period ending February 22, 2003.
Youngs effort at Papatowai Reef during the Rex Von Huben Big wave challenge stood out for the judges and would have received an award if thered been one for a wave caught from a paddle-in, as opposed to the rest of the nominees, who all caught waves with the assistance of a jet ski.
Wellington Surfing Champs
We headed over to Castlepoint last Saturday to check out the Wellington Regional Surfing Champs. A fantastic sunny day, Wairarapa really turned on the weather...and not bad waves either with semi clean 2-4 foot consistent east ground swell waves & light variable winds over the 2 days.
Results and pics will be loaded in the Surfco Homepage soon.
