From Chicago in the mid-eighties to Wellington 2002. The Poetry Slam is gaining ground. While American in origin the Poetry Slam is now a world-wide event So what is a Poetry Slam? It consists of a succession of Poets reading/performing an original piece of 3 minutes or less, with audience as judge of the “Winner” as in Peoples Choice
They are high energy events with audience surprised at the power of Poetry when delivered in such a format. There is no formula as to what works Sad, Funny, Reflective, it is what resonates in the Audience that wins.
Poetry Slams show people that Poetry can be and is Contemporary, Relevant, Accessible, Humorous and Entertaining. By doing so they help break down the misconceptions and stereotypes about Poetry.
