(Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand, 29 January 2003) Dunedin City is set to celebrate its unique and internationally acclaimed fashion scene with another fabulous show. id Dunedin 2003 - Otago Daily Times Winter Collection will be held on 27 February 2003. Now in its fourth season, id Dunedin features fifteen of the City's renowned designers including a group show of emerging designers at the beautifully restored Dunedin Railway Station, New Zealand's longest catwalk. 'Crowning Glory' is the theme for this year's Deutz Finale of winter garments exclusively made for 2003.
The fourth annual id Dunedin fashion show continues to mark this South Island city as the edgy and innovative centre of New Zealand's fashion scene, as well as giving consumers the rare opportunity to view upcoming collections before they hit prestigious fashion boutiques nation-wide.
Sponsors heighten the experience with a glass of Deutz for audience members, plus Arthur Barnett and Revlon gift packages. Stella Artois Beer and Smirnoff Vodka join the show for audience festivities. Models will dressed and made-up in the Redken backstage area, wearing make-up by Revlon and hair products by Redken, before appearing on the Cooke Howlison BMW catwalk. The Dunedin City Council confirms its ongoing commitment to the fashion industry by substantially increasing its financial support to ensure the id Dunedin's future fashion shows.
Lucky media and buyers may have seen Dunedin's top international export labels Carlson, Dot Com, Mild Red and NOM D at last October's L'Oreal New Zealand Fashion Week, now it's the public's turn to see what's hot this winter from Dunedin's finest.
She's rock royalty, she's an icon, she's a hip hippy heroine one moment, a gothic princess the next. She's Carlson's 'Sweet Child' winter 2003 collection of frockcoats and velvets inspired from Art Nouveau to 70s rock n' roll and 80s rock excess. Think early 70s Las Vegas, Elvis, and New York, and that's the inspiration for Dot Com's edgy street inspired unisex knitwear. Always one to turn heads, this year's no different with a shagpile jacket, plush 'Ferrari', and a pony-skin pattern bomber.
'Poetic Corrugations', a metaphor for the ups and downs of life, is the vision behind Mild Red's winter collection. The uniquely sculptured asymmetrical designs are themed after poets or poetry - 'Haiku', 'Baxter', and 'Ode to Joe'. Passion for vintage, re-worked alongside deconstructed, androgynous suiting and clever knitwear that defies traditional concepts of structure and texture, is the defining style of groundbreaking design label, NOM D. The Dunedin culture permeates the mood of the designs with its noir-ish aesthetic and pre-naturally gothic atmosphere.
These four 'wowed' L'Oreal at one of the New Generation Group shows. Old English theatre and travelling show posters amidst thoughts of convict colonisation of the South Pacific, are the themes for Akimbo's wearable, yet theatrically inspired, collection. "Lady Chatterley's Lover" by D. H. Lawrence inspires Christina Perriam with rich, sumptuous fabrics, and revealing lines of the 1920s era. Potent, sophisticated, uncompromising - where street meets boutique - describes Ivy 03 collection, inspired by Central Otago's dramatic vista. Drawing inspiration from the cathedrals of Dunedin, Toni Darling fuses references to the architecture, with the spirit the buildings evoke, in a powerful and thoroughly feminine collection themed 'Maiden of Honour'. News is Akimbo and Ivy are set to open their own store-formally known as Atria. Excess baggage is the undercurrent for Aduki's winter collection - the feeling of superfluous material yet complemented by the trademark structure and form. Paisley and corduroy pants, bodices in suede and wool, and textured stretch knits with leather detailing is in season for BurtenShaw range, formerly Distortions. Tough and practical, charming and beautiful, describe the 03 Fieke winter range themed 'Antarctic Heroines', inspired by the designer's visit to the South Pole.
id welcomes back to Dunedin Skin Deep label by designers Jarred Palmer, Peter Palmer, and Simon Swale who will feature their colourful leather and sheepskin jackets. And for the first time since 2001, id Dunedin presents a group show of recent graduates from the Otago Polytechnic School of Fashion 2002. 'Girly' yet 'playful' with the rebellious edge of 1920s Kit Kat club is the theme for designer Phillipa Bradley. Traditional, yet unexpected, is what designer Keita McGowan offers using a unique collection of recycled fabrics. The spirit and culture of rural NZ women's history and forgotten crafts is the theme for Charmaine Reveley who joins DFI this January.
id Dunedin 2003 - Otago Daily Times Winter Collection will be held at the Dunedin Railway Station on Thursday, 27 February, starting at 8.30pm. Tickets to the show are $50 for front-row seats, $45 for all other rows, and all include a complimentary glass of Deutz. Tickets go on sale on 5 February 2003 and are sold this year by Ticketek in Dunedin at (03) 477 8597, and nationally at local Ticketek offices or on its website at www.ticketek.com.
