Published: Tue 28 Jan 2003 02:15 PM
Manchester's favourite fishmonger is about to arrive in Wellington .........
SHOW INFO: Mr Scruff @ Studio Nine, Wellington Wednesday 5 Feb 2003 (Waitangi Eve) Doors 10pm EXCLUSIVE NZ CLUB DATE - 5 hr set (no way "blink & you`ll miss it" festival business !!)
BACKGROUND SCRUFFOLOGY:
Just about anyone who's ever bashed around the floor like an over-caffeinated pinball to his marathon sets at the unmissable Ninja Tune monthly knees-ups in London would enthusiastically agree with Q Magazines` assertion of Mr. Scruff as a must-see-before-you-die DJ.
Yes, our Mr Scruff is regularly voted as "most innovative DJ" (or similar) in various polls. He prefers to play long sets, and it is rare to see him DJ for less than four hours. He plays a whole mixture of stuff, from hip hop to jazz, from breaks to funk and all sorts of stuff in between. His own productions are unique, funky and amusing - he likes to describe his stuff as "trouser jazz".
A really brilliant DJ with a great sense of humour, even the visuals are great - his own child-like animations are displayed on big screens, proclaiming things like "drink tea" and "eat pies". His real name is Andrew Carthy, and his most excellent website ( http://www.mrscruff.com) should be seen by all.
Not only is Scruff joyously schizophrenic on the decks, but also on wax - the ³orca king² of breakbeat wizardry. There's something inherently jolly about Andy Carthy's tunes, both as a producer & DJ. He is adored by those who don't take their music too seriously and admired by those who do.
