The Mystery of Parachute's New Home is Unveiled
After weeks of speculation it was announced today that the Parachute Music Festival will be held at Mystery Creek Events Centre in Hamilton from 2004.
Parachute is moving from Totara Springs, Matamata in order to accommodate the growth the event has experienced over the past few years. Mystery Creek Events Centre will allow the festival to expand significantly in the future while also further increasing the quality of the event.
Barry Quayle, Mystery Creek Events Centre General Manager, says, "Mystery Creek Events Centre has created a leading facilities infrastructure which enables better management of major events. As an example of the improvements to be experienced at Mystery Creek, we are pleased to be working with Parachute to offer improved visitor access and higher levels of hygiene. We believe the matching of two such successful teams, Mystery Creek Events Centre and Parachute, will help to achieve a quantum leap in the quality of an already successful event".
For Parachute '04 it's goodbye to smelly portaloos! The new venue is equipped with permanent, flushable toilets which is sure to appeal to the masses of people who have flocked to the festival in the past.
Mystery Creek offers the possibility of powered camp sites for the first time for Parachute visitors. Plumbed hot water showers will also be available. These facilities will improve the festival experience for all attendees, especially those with young families.
Parachute '04 will be easier for people to access with four road entries into the site. This will minimise traffic delays and waiting times for visitors to the festival.
Parachute Music's Events and PR Manager Mark Mortlock says, "We are very excited to be moving to our new home at Mystery Creek Events Centre next year. The facilities at Mystery Creek will enable us to continue to grow and improve Parachute in the future. We look forward to welcoming everyone to Parachute '04 at Mystery Creek in January 2004."

A-Z for Hosting Parachute '04 at Mystery Creek
A
Access - Access to Mystery Creek from Cambridge and from Hamilton (SH1
and SH3). Gate 0 accesses the site from Airport Road, while Gates 1-5
access the site from either end of Mystery Creek Road. The registration
system will be utilizing the STREAM access system, which assists with
faster access to the site, due to quicker registration process.
Airport - The Hamilton International Airport is across the road from the
Gate 0 access to the Mystery Creek site. The airport has flights from
around New Zealand and from Australia. The Airport also offers
accommodation at the Airport Motor Inn.
Alcohol - Although Mystery Creek is a licensed venue, alcohol will still
not be permitted at the Parachute Festival, which is keeping within the
principles of the festival.
Animals - Animals (other than seeing dogs) will not be permitted on the
site, please leave these are home. Mystery Creek animals will not be on
the camping portion of the site for around 2 months prior to the
Festival, therefore there will be no COW POO in the camping areas!
B
Buildings - The many permanent buildings will be utilized during the
Festival. As yet, a full site plan has not been finalized. However, it
is fairly certain that the Pavilion, Dome, Spantech, Exhibition Building
and Stihl buildings will be utilized as Stages, The Bledisloe will be
the food area for Crew and Artists, Kiosks will be utilized for food
sales, and the ANZ, Gallagher and Intalok will form the hub of the
Village area. The Intalok will be the Parachute Office for the
Festival. The New Release Building will be the back stage area for the
Main Stage. Other buildings are yet to be discussed and allocated
purposes.
Banking Facilities - ANZ have an ATM machine and a bank "room" at
Mystery Creek. While the ATM will be operating, the bank facilities
will have to be arranged between Parachute and ANZ.
C
Camping - Camping will be on the flat part of the site (see aerial
photo). Powered camping will be offered at a small additional charge.
A family camping area will be identified. Crew camping will be behind
the Bledisloe/Village. All camping areas will be mown and will not have
animals on for about 2 months prior to the festival. Surface (under
grass) is mainly sand, so great drainage - just in case of rain! Full
and final site plan yet to be finalised.
Camp Store - This is part of The Village area, and is likely to be in
the Gallagher building.
Cell Phone Coverage - The site already has two Telecom mobile repeater
aerials. Appropriate number repeater aerials, both Telecom and
Vodafone, will be organized by the Parachute team specifically for the
festival.
D
Dogs - As per any other event - not permitted, apart from seeing dogs.
Drainage - As Mystery Creek is sand based, water drains away very
quickly. Roads around the site form part of the drainage system.
E
F
G
Gates - Public will access from Gate 0, 1, 2, 4, and 5. Crew and
artists access from Gate 3. Registration tents at Gate 2 and Gate 1
internal.
Grandstands - Grandstand seating will be set up in the Pavilion, and the
rest MAY be set up in the Main Stage area. This is yet to be fully
discussed.
H
I
J
Jetty - The jetty will be out of bounds, but MAY be utilized by a boat
shuttle service, from Hamilton to Mystery Creek site - yet to be
finalized.
K
L
Lakes - The lakes form part of the drainage system and as such, are not
to be swum in.
M
N
O
P
Parking - Parking will be along the top level of the site and into the
Lion Park if required. There MAY be some camp areas where people can
park their car with their tents - yet to be finalized with the final
site plan.
Pavilion and Extension - The Pavilion will be utilized as the second
stage area. This will be set up with seating, with exact number of
seats yet to be finalized. The Extension MAY be utilized, but has not
yet been fully discussed.
Powered camp sites - Powered camp sites will be available. These will
be sold and reserved as part of the pre-registration schedule. There
will be a small charge involved, which Parachute will set for the
attendees. Sites can be reserved and purchased from Parachute Music.
Q
R
River - The River will not be accessible and will not be a swimming
area. The jetty MAY be utilized for boat transport from Hamilton to
Mystery Creek, but that will be all it MAY be used for. If asked for a
reason, this is mainly because of the fast water flows past the
property, which is dangerous.
S
Showers - We have 16 permanent showers in our buildings. Otherwise,
showers will be purpose built for the event each year. They will be
built on concrete pads, with their own water tanks. Separate men's and
women's showers will be provided.
Stages - Main stage will be purpose built in Area 10, or the
amphitheatre area - marked on aerial photo. This area should
comfortably accommodate around 30,000 spectators. The Pavilion will be
the next main stage. Then The Dome, Spantech, Exhibition Building and
Stil MAY be other stages. The exact site layout and stages are yet to
be finalized by Parachute.
Swimming - Again, River and Lakes out of bounds and not able to be swum
in. Parachute organizers are considering creating a water slide down
the hill into Area 6/7. They have also talked about creating a swimming
hole somewhere, but this is yet to be fully discussed properly.
T
Term - The term of the Venue Hire Agreement is 5 years, with a right to
renew for a further 5 years.
Toilets - We have a lot of permanent flushing toilet blocks on site -
111 pans, 62 urinal (space) and 16 permanent showers. The rest will be
bought onto site for the Festival. The first priority will be utilising
toilets Portacom's connected to the sewerage system and as a last
resort, Portaloo units.
U
V
Venue - Mystery Creek is the VENUE for the Festival and ALL other
aspects of the event, ie: advertising, registration, programme,
artists/performers, etc, will continue to be managed by Parachute Music.
W
Water Supplies - Potable water will be available at dedicated locations
around the site. To be finalized with the site plan discussions.
