Climb every mountain!
With Auckland Museum’s Hillary Living Treasures Day on Sunday 19 January.
The first in this year’s Living Treasures Day series, Hillary Day is timed to coincide with the Museum’s landmark exhibition on the life and achievements of Sir Edmund Hillary.
Activities for the day include a demonstration and talk from the New Zealand Alpine Club, exhibition tours of “Sir Edmund Hillary: Everest and Beyond”, a lecture on Himalayan fabrics and design by Indus Oceania designer Samita Bhatacharjee, and the ever popular art of henna tattooing.
For the kids, there are prayer flag workshops, giant bees (Hillary began his career as an apiarist) and websites.
Don’t miss National Geographic’s documentary, Return to Everest and Sky Television’s all day screening of National Geographic Channel. A special performance of Estralita, a short children’s story about love by poet Grant Hindin Miller.
Other Hillary events planned for early February include 10-minute sneak previews of north Indian classical dancing by Kathak dancer, Vandana Kaul who will perform at the Edge on Tuesday 4 February. Kathak dance is an ancient art form which evolved from temple dancing to the courts of the Mughal emperors. Three Museum previews will occur on Monday 3 February.
Usual admission applies for Hillary Day: entry by donation, $5 is suggested, children are free.
