ex-Narcs playing at the Temple Sat 21 Dec
Saturday 21 December - 9pm Snorkel
featuring Steve Clarkson & Tony Waine(The Narcs) & Nigel Gavin (Gitbox Rebellion) Temple - Auckland's Live Original Music Venue
So what can you expect? Something very different... Ex-Narcs Steve Clarkson and Tony Waine have been writing, recording and performing with guitar virtuoso Nigel Gavin in their own band SNORKEL for over a year. They play 'under-water surf music' - it's like when you fall off the big wave and you're underwater for a while! Guitar music from the Pulp Fiction variety - music from Dick Dale, The Mermen, traditional surf classics given the underwater treatment, plus a healthy dose of originals.
"The sound has an edge - a Dick Dale rhythmic energy from guitarist Nigel Gavin, clean and interesting bass lines and sounds from Tony Waine, and Steve Clarkson is in drummer's paradise with plenty of room to fill." North Shore Times

New Yorker Nigel Gavin has called New Zealand home for more than a decade. After founding the now legendary GITBOX REBELLION in the late 1980s, Nigel collaborated with ROBERT FRIPP for several years, as a member of THE LEAGUE OF CRAFTY GUITARISTS. In New Zealand, Nigel was a founding member in such well-known local bands as THE NAIROBI TRIO and THE JEWS BROTHERS. And he has most recently played with The Blue Bottom Stompers, Below the Bassline, Caitlin Smith, Jonathan Besser and Bravura. Nigel recently released his first solo album, Music for Flem II, a collection of mostly solo guitar improvisations.
Bassist Tony Waine was a member of award-winning NZ band THE NARCS and the recipient of the 1986 APRA Silver Scroll. The Narcs had 3 studio albums and released their compilation "The Best of The Narcs" earlier in 2002. Tony has recently returned from 12 years of gigging and recording in Australia. He has been playing with Nigel and Steve in their underwater-surf-band SNORKEL.
Steve Clarkson is recognised as one of New Zealand's best drummers and an accomplished songwriter. He was a member of THE NARCS and has played with some of NZ's finest musicians including Graham Brazier, Wayne Gillespie, and Dave McArtney. Steve returns to the NZ stage after a long stint in London. Welcome back.
