Hoyts Wattie’s Cans Film Festival Premieres Monday 25th November
With the ninth annual Hoyts Wattie’s Cans Film Festival is only days away the Salvation Army is calling for last minute
can donations to local cinemas.
Throughout this week movie fans from all over New Zealand have been going to cinemas around the country to exchange a
can of food for a ticket to the movies next Monday 25th November.
All cans will be donated to The Salvation Army’s Christmas Food Appeal benefiting hundreds of less fortunate families
and individuals around the country.
“We are extremely grateful to all who have donated to The Salvation Army through this exciting project, and encourage
those who haven’t yet done so, to pop along to their local participating cinema,” says Lt. Colonel Don Oliver of The
Salvation Army. “With Christmas fast approaching the donations we receive through the film festival make a huge
difference to our foodbanks being able to respond to the increased demand at this time of year.”
Over 100 screenings of recent movies will commence between 6.00pm and 7.00pm on Monday evening 25th November nationwide.
“Previous years have seen totals of 40,000 cans donated to the Salvation Christmas Appeal and this year Wattie’s hope to
set a new record” says Mike Pretty at Wattie’s. “We are again donating 12,000 cans toward the foodbanks which will add
to the total received from the public. In past years we have heard of many people that bring in more than one can, which
shows just how much support there is around New Zealand for the Festival and its cause.”
However, people have to be in quick to make the most of this opportunity to see such movies as Mr Deeds, Stuart Little
2, The Crocodile Hunter, Collision Course, Lilo & Stitch, Big Fat Liar and Scooby Doo. This year the festival will also host its first preview – Santa Clause 2. Santa
Clause 2 starring Tim Allen will be showing at selected cinemas nationwide.
“This weekend will be a busy one as people continue to bring in their cans of food,” says Elizabeth Trotman, Marketing
Manager at Hoyts Cinemas. “We encourage people to be in quick to ensure they get a seat to their most preferred movie
choice for Monday night.”
