Shona Laing to Play at Temple
Now, with the release of her second compilation album, "The Essential Shona Laing", and an ever increasing collection of
new songs that she intends to record in the New Year, Shona is playing live.
Although best remembered for a handful of pop hits, notably "1905" and "Glad I'm Not A Kennedy", Shona Laing has
recorded nine original albums in the three decades of her career including over a hundred songs.
From the humour of the guitar dittys "I Love My Feet" and "Neutral and Nuclear Free" to the hard driving defiance of
"America" and "Soviet Snow", the mournful laments of "Highway Warriors" and "Across The Irish Sea", and the bittersweet
of "Heartless Bones" and "Mercy of Love", her songs and intense performances are as far reaching as the topics her
lyrics touch upon.
Laing's illustrious career originated in the UK in the 1970s, living hand to mouth and singing for her supper; swiftly
escalating to working with Manfred Mann in the early 80's. Returning to NZ in 1982 she recorded "Genre" for Pagan
Records in 1984 which contains the notorious single "Glad I'm Not a Kennedy" - the New York 12 inch mix of which making
the Billboard dance chart, prompting her to tour the US twice.
She moved away from Auckland to the Bay of Plenty in 1996 and gathered together a menagerie of country critters "for
some sense of perspective", but the music is still with her and the songs are still coming.
