Star Studded International Riders Confirmed
A star-studded cast of international medal winning stars has just been confirmed to compete in next month’s Mitsubishi
Adelaide International Horse Trials.
“We are extremely pleased to announce the recent World Equestrian Games Silver Medallist (in the individual category)
Jeanette Brakewell from Great Britain will be competing,” said the Minister for Tourism Jane Lomax-Smith.
“She will be joined by USA’s World Equestrian Games Gold Medallist (in the team category), John Williams. Neither of
these riders have competed in Adelaide’s Olympic and World Championship level event before. They will be up against one
of Australia’s greatest - triple Olympic Gold Medallist, Matt Ryan as they vie for first place in the CIC** (two star)
class.”

Spectators have more chances than ever to see international riders in action during the new “Twilight Dressage’ on
Horseland Dressage Twilight on Friday 8th November, which will feature the CIC** class. Internationals will also be
competing on Thursday and Friday during day sessions. .
Held in Victoria Park Racecourse, the Friday night Dressage competition will also be followed by a free screening of
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone on the Clipsal Super Screen.
“The Mitsubishi Adelaide International Horse Trials is an exciting event for Adelaide,” said the Minister. “With
participation by so many well known international riders, this year’s line up will provide great sporting entertainment
for everyone who attends - as both observers or participants.
“It will also provide an excellent opportunity to showcase our beautiful city to the many national and international
visitors who are coming here for what we are sure will be a most memorable international event,” said the Minister.
Spectators are invited to come early to the free entry Adelaide City Council Cross Country competition on Saturday 9th
November. The R.M.Williams Show Jumping day will be held on Sunday 10th November.
The event is owned and managed by Australian Major Events, a division of the South Australian Tourism Commission and is
coming up in Adelaide’s East Park Lands and Victoria Park Racecourse from November 7 - 10, 2002.

The only “inner City equestrian event’ in the world and the only permanent CCI**** (Olympic-level, four star)
competition held in the Southern Hemisphere.
Where: East End Parklands and Victoria Park, Adelaide - the capital of South Australia
When: November 7th -10th with a week of associated activity.

Quirkies: Horses travel at around 570m/minute
- CCI**** course is approx 6400m long, with 35 jumps and will take approx 11
minutes 20 seconds to complete
- CCI*** course is approx 5850m long, taking approx 10 minutes 15 seconds to complete
- CIC** is around 3900m long, taking around 7 minutes/10 seconds to complete.

The course is designed, for the first time, by UK’s Mike Etherington-Smith. Mike E.S. is renowned for his work at the
Sydney Olympics, as a director of the British Eventing Board and has been an FEI International Course Designer and TD
since 1986.

Background: Now in its fifth year, the field of entries continues to grow following last year’s
extension from the CCI*** (three star) and CCI**** (four star) competition to include a CIC** (two star) class.
