LUNA ROSSA PROCEEDS TO THE QUARTER FINALS IN THE LEADING GROUP.
With today's races Round Robin Two of the 2002-2003 Louis Vuitton Cup is officially over. Luna Rossa completes this first series of racing fourth overall with 11 points. Today Luna Rossa did not race against Alinghi as the Swiss last night filed a notice of withdrawal from Round Robin Two.
The Swiss team completes the two Round Robins first overall. Team Prada, therefore, gains the point of the match with Alinghi without racing. The teams now have 7 days off before the start of the quarter finals, scheduled for Tuesday November 12. Only the leading eight teams at the end of the Round Robin Two move forward to the quarter finals, divided in two groups according to their placement: from first to fourth ("double chance group") and from fifth to eighth ("single chance group").
The top teams of both groups have the right to choose their opponent within their own group. Tomorrow Alinghi and Victory Challenge will announce which teams they have picked to race against in the quarter finals. The four teams of the double chance group race each other in a best of seven series. The two winners in this phase move directly forward to the semifinals, while the two losing teams go to the repechage round of the quarterfinals.
Also the four teams in the single chance group race each other in a best of seven series: the two winners go to the repechage round, while the two losers are eliminated from the Louis Vuitton Cup. In the repechage round of the quarterfinals the two losing teams of the double chance group race against the winners of the single chance group in a best of seven series. The winners of this round qualify for the semifinals while the losers are eliminated.
