PRESS RELEASE
RR2 OF LOUIS VUITTON CUP IS ABOUT TO START, TIM MASCALZONE LATINO IS READY TOO TO START AGAIN RACING
Auckland, 21st Octber, 2002 On wednesday 23rd October the LVC RR2 will officially start in Auckland and “TIM Mascalzone Latino”, the team headed by Vincenzo Onorato is ready to take part to his first participation in the trials for America’s Cup.
“ Our victory against Le Defi Areva Welsh Eddie Warden Owen coach and one of the only two non-italian members of the team said - was the culmination of two years of hard work by the sailing team from the Island of Elba. It was a lonely vigil as the team had only one boat but the fruits of their labor came to the fore in the race against Le Defi.
The round robin draw brought Mascalzone Latino up against the top three teams in the regatta in the first three races. Each race, the first against One World, the second against Alinghi and the third against Oracle were used as part of the performance analysis process which the team, with no previous Americas Cup experience, required to asses their speed potential and how to make the boat go faster.
The team’s performance has steadily improved and we are confident that the next round robin will bring much closer racing and more race winning opportunities. Mascalzone Latino has risen to the challenge, the mood is upbeat but relaxed and the team cannot wait to do battle once again with the world’s best sailors”.
Designer Giovanni Ceccarelli said:”I’m very pleased by the work carried on either from the design side itself or technical: “TIM Mascalzone Latino” proved to be a competitive boat in comparison with at least 50% of the fleet racing in Hauraki Gulf very good a true wind range up to 15 knots. It’s a fast boat on downwind legs in any different wind conditions. During last week between the two RRs we have been working on appendages (we’ll be using a new rudder) as well as on sails”.
In fact tomorrow RR1 will come to an end with the match “TIM Mascalzone Latino” vs “Prada” that has been postponed many times: on boar as the 17th, Lara Ciribì, Director of Communication of the team.
Mascalzone Latino and its team are racing with the TIM colours, the only mobile telephone company entirely Italian and sole sponsor for this all-Italian challenge.
