Schedule Release Reveals The Power Of Team Work At L'oréal New Zealand Fashion Week
The official schedule of designer shows for L'Oréal New Zealand Fashion Week 2002 has been released revealing three days and four nights of glamour and "defiantly different" New Zealand style.
>From the official opening by the Governor General at 6pm on Monday October 21 to the final on-site collection at Auckland's Town Hall-The Edge, the timing of each show in the line-up reflects not just the attitude and mood of each label but also the determination and inventiveness of the organiser.
Managing Director, Pieter Stewart drew up a provisional timetable and then got the designers in to her office to sort out an agreed schedule.
"It's sensible and civilised, everyone gets a say and they leave with a real understanding of what it takes to make this event happen. It's a team effort and it works," she says.
With almost 50 labels to accommodate, Stewart has created six group shows for designers with more compact ranges. These include two "New Generation" parades featuring emerging talent from throughout the country.
Three fashion-filled days await delegates this year. On the morning of Tuesday October 22, Gaye Bartlett is staging a Breakfast parade to start the first day. The last show that night is at 8pm with shows the next morning from 11am.
There are five off-site shows away from The Edge, with secrecy shrouding the locations of all but one of them.
Gubb and Mackie is showing its winter collection of mens and womens wear in the grounds of Government House, followed by a 1940s style ball. It's the first time the Governor General's Auckland residence has been opened for such an event.
Tickets to these designer shows are not for sale at any price and are only issued at the discretion of the designer.
Whether off-site or at The Edge, invitations to the innovative and lavish events put on by WORLD, Zambesi and Trelise Cooper last year were highly coveted. The inclusion of Kate Sylvester and Nicholas Blanchet in this year's line-up has added to the frock frenzy.
The release of the schedule for any Fashion Week is much anticipated by the industry for business reasons as well.
With the Schedule in hand, delegates can confidently make appointments to discuss a particular range with the designer and know they won't be missing another collection they desperately wanted to see. It also gives them time to visit the Exhibition in the Nokia Marquee where non-catwalk collections including shoe, handbag and jewellery ranges are on display.
When delegates aren't examining hemlines, draping and colour, there's the opportunity to relax in the L'Oréal Powder Room, a haven for anyone needing a touch-up to their make up or manicure and the place to hear all the "goss."
While L'Oréal New Zealand Fashion Week is essentially a trade show for buyers and media with a firm focus on export dollars for our apparel industry, there is also opportunity for the New Zealand's fashion-hungry public.
Newmarket Fashion Friday (October 25) takes place at the end of the collections, enabling the public to catch in-season parades of clothes and visit the Nokia Exhibition Marquee to experience the same buying atmosphere as the delegates.
Newmarket Fashion Friday also features Style on Stage - the highlights of the collections - a live parade at 7pm.
