Appointment of Chief Executive of National Library of New Zealand and National Librarian
The State Services Commissioner, Michael Wintringham, announced today the appointment of Penny Carnaby as Chief
Executive of National Library of New Zealand and National Librarian.
Ms Carnaby is presently the University Librarian at Macquarie University, a position she has held since February 2002.
Prior to this appointment Ms Carnaby was the Deputy Librarian at Macquarie University from July 2000, including a period
as acting Librarian from April 2001 to February 2002.
Between 1977 and June 2000 Ms Carnaby held various positions at Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology
including Polytechnic Librarian and Director of the Library/Learning Resource Centre. She is a qualified librarian
(Leeds Polytechnic) and has a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Diploma of Education from the University of New South Wales.
She served as National President of the Library and Information Association of New Zealand Aotearoa (LIANZA) in
1999/2000 and was awarded a Fellowship of the Association in 2001.
"Ms Carnaby has a high standing and credibility in the library and information sector, both in New Zealand and
Australia. She has strong leadership skills and an interest in improving the accessibility of historical collections
through the use of technology," Mr Wintringham said.
"She has an excellent understanding of New Zealand's information and knowledge issues and the relationship management
skills necessary to develop effective partnerships with the wide range of groups interested in achieving greater
accessibility to New Zealand's research and heritage collections," he said.
Mr Wintringham acknowledged the work of Sue Guest, who has been the acting chief executive since June 2002. Ms Carnaby,
who is currently based in New South Wales, will take up her appointment in January 2003.

Background
National Library of New Zealand, Te Puna Matauranga o Aotearoa, has a unique role in collecting and maintaining
literature and information resources that relate to New Zealand and the Pacific. It makes this information readily
available and preserves New Zealand's documentary heritage for generations to come. It incorporates the Alexander
Turnbull Library. National Library also offers services to New Zealand schools from centres throughout the country.
