A Milestone Year
NZ On Air's 2001/2002 financial year was a milestone for the agency, with particular success achieved through its New Zealand music and television drama strategies, according to the NZ On Air annual report.
NZ On Air Chairman, Don Hunn, reported that the agency is in a sound financial situation, and acknowledged continuing Government support. He paid tribute to the stewardship of his predecessor, David Beatson, whose term as Chairman ended in May this year.
Chief Executive, Jo Tyndall, noted the contribution the agency's "Phase Four" music strategy has made to the substantial increase in New Zealand music played on commercial radio.
"Our music team is actively promoting New Zealand music to radio and television music programmers. This work, together with our support for new recording artists and album funding, is positively humming. The results are speaking for themselves," said Ms Tyndall. "The amount of New Zealand music playing on commercial radio has increased by 40% in the last two years."
"It's been a great year for television too, with popular drama series on all three main free-to-air channels – Mercy Peak on TV One, Street Legal on TV2 and The Strip on TV3 – and a bunch of awards for NZ On Air funded programmes in the 2002 TV Guide Television Awards," she said. "The sustained, consistent presence of drama on all three channels is the main objective of our strategy, and it's a first for New Zealand television."
"When you look at the diversity represented in the programmes and broadcasting services provided for the year, I think you can safely say there's more than a little there for everyone, and that's a good outcome."
