Yachting New Zealand Excellence Awards
ASB Bank Young Sailor and SYNERGI Travel Sailor of 2002 Decided...
Excellence and tireless dedication in yachting was celebrated at Yachting New Zealand's Yachting Excellence Awards held at Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron on Friday 27 September 2002.
A Yachting New Zealand convened judging panel consisting of internationally renowned yachting commentator Peter Montgomery, International Yachting Judge Richard Gladwell, and Yachting New Zealand's President Geoff Thorpe selected the best from the best from nominees in the five award categories:
* SYNERGI Travel Sailor of the Year * ASB Bank Young Sailor of the Year * Yachting New Zealand Merit Award * Yachting New Zealand Honour Award * President's Award
Reigning 470 World Champions, Simon Cooke and Peter Nicholas were awarded the Sir Bernard Fergusson Trophy and named as the 2002 SYNERGI Travel Sailor's of the Year.
18 year old Auckland Boardsailor, Thomas Ashley was named the 2002 ASB Bank Young Sailor of the Year. His glowing list of Mistral titles impressed the judges and put him ahead in a very competitive line-up of 10 finalist nominees including the Yachting New Zealand Youth Team.
At the Yachting Excellence Awards Dinner, finalist nominees in the Merit and Honour Award categories each receive an award as commendation of their varied and valued contributions to yachting.
The Award Winners were as follows:
