Boney M To Perform Charity Concert In Whakatane
The hit seventies rock band Boney M – famous for hits such as By the Rivers of Babylon, Daddy Cool, Rasputin and Brown
Girl in the Ring - will perform a one-off charity concert in Whakatane next week.
The band will only perform two concerts while in the country. The first is an “entry-by-gold coin-donation” charity
concert at Rugby Park in Whakatane on Wednesday September 11, 2002 followed by a $55 per person concert at the Bruce
Mason Centre on the North Shore in Auckland.
Originally founded in Germany, Boney M was one of the disco-orientated pop acts which dominated the European charts
throughout the late seventies and early eighties with a string of hits well remembered to this day.
In 2002, Boney M featuring original lead singer, Liz Mitchell is still a phenomenal live act drawing huge crowds across
Europe and the show is as spectacular as ever.
The Eastern Bay of Plenty Life Education Trust, in conjunction with Radio One Double X has managed to secure the band
for an open air concert, which organisers expect will attract thousands of people.
All money raised from the gate donations will be used to provide a truck for the EBOP Life Education Trust to transport
its mobile classroom around the region.
Tania Wright, concert organiser, is anticipating a huge night.
“Not only will you get to see Boney M live for a very small cost, but there is definitely a family flavour to this
concert, with local acts such as Legends Dance Group also performing. Plus there will be a bouncy castle for the kids
and hot food available.
Ms Wright says the event is also for a worthy cause. “The mission of the trust is to help give young children of New
Zealand, through positive health-based education, the knowledge and skills to keep them free from harmful substances.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity for people to have an inexpensive fun family evening and help a worthwhile organisation at
the same time,” she says.
The concert starts at 6.30pm and is expected to finish by 9pm – just in time to put the kids to bed.
