Romancing The Night With The NZSO Chamber Orchestra
The NZSO Chamber Orchestra presents an enchanting concert in Auckland of changing moods with wonderful melodies featuring NZSO Principals, Dale Gold and Bridget Douglas, capped by lush romantic strings in that most erotic of pieces - Verklärte Nacht.
In a remarkable work for double bass, the most underestimated of orchestral instruments, the fireworks of Bottesini's Fantasia on La Sonnambula is contrasted by images of the night in Vivaldi's Flute Concerto 'La Notte', performed by NZSO Principal Flute Bridget Douglas, on an authentic wooden flute.
Contemporary specialist, Hamish McKeich will conduct Schoenberg's Verklärte Nacht , inspired by an erotic poem. This shocked many of his Viennese contemporaries, but today he is seen as one of the most important figures in the development of music in the twentieth-century.
Principal Double Bass of the NZSO since 1976, Dale Gold has performed frequently with the NZSO Chamber Orchestra, CadeNZa, the NZ Jazz Orchestra, and many other groups around the country since moving to New Zealand from Philadelphia.
Dunedin-born NZSO Principal Flute Bridget Douglas has become an established concert artist, regularly performing solo and chamber recitals and concertos since making her acclaimed Carnegie Hall debut in 1997.
Hamish McKeich made his NZ conducting debut in 1998 after spending a number of years conducting and performing in Europe. Co-founder of new music ensemble, Stroma, and conductor of Auckland ensemble 175 East, he has conducted the NZSO, the regional orchestras and returns regularly to Holland to direct the EX Orkest.
The NZSO Chamber Orchestra was founded in 1987 from leading players of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. It generally performs without a conductor and is directed from the first violin chair by Music Director Donald Armstrong. The Chamber Orchestra performs regularly with distinguished international soloists, who have included the great German tenor Peter Schreier, leading Mozart interpreter, the fortepianist Malcolm Bilson, cellist David Geringas, and the English pianist Richard Rodney Bennett.
