A Small Life continues on award-winning way
A New Zealand, 52-minute digital video musical drama, entitled A Small Life, continues to gain international recognition
- this time at a festival in Portugal.
A Small Life has won a Special Mention Award in the Television Section at the 6th Avanca International Meeting of
Cinema, TV, Video and Multimedia in Avanca, Portugal.
This festival celebrates a global perspective of the contemporary features in cinema, television, video and multimedia.
This is the second international award for A Small Life, which won the Grand Prix Senef 2000 at the 1st Seoul Net
Digital Festival in Korea, and has gone on to screen at festivals in Finland, the Czech Republic and India. The film was
directed by Michael Heath, with music and visual effects by David Downes, and cinematography by Steve Latty.
It premiered at the 2000 International Film Festival where Festival Director Bill Gosden said of the film: “Unbearable
sorrow is answered with unbearable beauty in this aching lament for a lost child.”
Heath describes his film as a “cinematic song-cycle”, exploring the power of healing through love and music.
A Small Life was funded by the Screen Innovation Production Fund, a partnership between Creative New Zealand and the New
Zealand Film Commission.
