Outstanding contemporary dancer, Raewyn Hill returns to the stage with a tour of her solo show, WHEN LOVE COMES CALLING. This production wowed audiences and critics alike at its premiere in Christchurch 2001.
WHEN LOVE COMES CALLING is a 65 min solo dance theatre work, with a set which includes water and a dirt covered floor. Exploring six words - Regret, Denial, Trust, Temptation, Desire and Truth - Hill takes the audience on a journey of love.
WHEN LOVE COMES CALLING is told through dance and film. A documentary style interview with Norman Levido is projected onto the back wall and fills the entire space. Raewyn draws on both her and Norman’s personal experiences to expose the beauty, pain and loss of the universal theme of love. Inspired by the sheer emotional intensity of the subject matter, WHEN LOVE COMES CALLING enthrals and captivates audiences with an evening of dance that pushes the boundaries of physicality and emotion.
Originally from Christchurch, Raewyn is considered to be one of New Zealand's finest contemporary dancers. She has performed with New Zealand's foremost choreographers and dancers, including the Douglas Wright Dance Company and Michael Parmenter's Commotion Company. Raewyn has also toured Australia with Gary Stewart's company THWACK. Her most recent choreographic commissions have been for the Royal New Zealand Ballet and Footnote Dance Company. She will premiere her second full-length work WHITE, in July at Bats Theatre, Wellington.
WHEN LOVE COMES CALLING features an original score by Wellington Composer
Nic McGowan, costume design by one of New Zealand's leading fashion designers, Andrea Moore and a light design by Martyn Roberts. Acclaimed playwright, Jo Randerson, was Raewyn’s Dramaturg.
What the Critics Say
"Raewyn Hill is without doubt New Zealand’s most exciting female contemporary dancer. That she is also an impressive choreographer is a bonus and is so rare we must celebrate not only her talent but her decision to remain and share her talents with the New Zealand Arts Community" Christchurch Press, Dec 2001

This is a world class production, make no mistake. Worthy to be seen far afield and a production to be truly proud of. If you are a lover of dance and theatre, it is not to be missed.
