Josefina Baez: Performance And Workshops

Published: Thu 13 Jun 2002 01:29 PM
Josefina Baez (Dominican Republic/New York) is now in Auckland, performing her acclaimed solo show, "Dominicanish", and teaching workshops for performers and teachers: http://users.actrix.co.nz/magdalen
The performance "Dominicanish" is about Josefina's personal experience of migrating from the Dominican Republic to New York, learning English as a third language and creating her identity through language and performance. Josefina combines spoken word, jazz music and Kuchi Pudi, a form of Indian dance, in her performance. There will be only one performance of "Dominicanish" in Auckland, on Friday 14 June, 7pm, at the Kenneth Myers Centre, Auckland University, $20/$12.
The performance is 50 minutes long and is followed by a discussion. As well as being a fascinating, funny and inspirational performance, "Dominicanish" will appeal to anyone who is interested in language, performance and issues of migration and marginality.
The workshops are for performers at all levels, and teachers across all disciplines and age-groups. This is an opportunity for participants to gain a deeper understanding of Josefina's teaching and devising methods, and to learn practical skills that can be immediately applied in the classroom and in creative work. Recent workshop participants have sent positive feedback saying they have used techniques the next day in the classroom.
The workshops are from 10am to 4pm, on Saturday 15 June (for performers), and Sunday 16 June (for teachers); $50 waged and $25 unwaged. Phone 025 269 0222 or reply to this email to book or request more information.
Following Auckland, Josefina will perform "Dominicanish" at the Fuel Festival in Hamilton (20-22 June), and teach workshops.
Josefina Baez is in New Zealand as a guest of Magdalena Aotearoa. Further information is available at: http://users.actrix.co.nz/magdalen
