Che Fu and Salmonella Dub have scooped the Tuis at the 2002 New Zealand Music Awards held at Auckland’s Saint James
Theatre.
New Zealand’s undisputed king of R & B Che Fu received the coveted album of the year award for Navigator while the track Fade Away earned him the titles of
single of the year and best music video.
Che Fu also triumphed in the newly-established R & B Hip Hop category and took out the coveted honour of top male vocalist.
Eclectic ensemble Salmonella Dub took the honours for top group, international achievement and top engineer for their
album Inside the Dub Plates.
The endearing and silky sounds of Anika Moa earned her the title of top female vocalist for the album Thinking Room and
her abilities with a different keyboard helped her tap out songwriter of the year for the track Youthful.
The New Zealand Music Awards, presented by the Recording Industry of New Zealand in association with Coke handed out 24
awards at this year’s ceremony.
Other top winners were Goodshirt, recognised as top new act for the album Good, which also took best album cover, and
the long-time player Greg Johnson whose The Best Yet album took the Tui for compilation of the year.
The Topp twins continue to receive the accolades with the top country prize, while C L Bob, Jack Body, Bob McNeill and
The Lads took home respective awards for Jazz, Classical, Folk and Gospel.
Maori artists received tohu in two categories this year – The Mana Reo award went to Ruia and Ranea for their Waiata of
Bob Marley, and the Rangiatea Concert party took home the Tui for Mana Maori.
Children’s tastes were accounted for during the awards with Fatcat and Fishface’s Dog Breath earning the respect of the
judges in the children’s music category.
Sola Rosa took out the debut Electronica title for the Solarised album and previous recipients Stellar* stayed on
winning form, teaming up with Tom Bailey to win top producer for Magic Line.
With radio airtime a major factor in the judging of New Zealand’s top musical honours, Brad King took home the
well-earned title of radio programmer of the year for his work on The Rock Network.
