19th November 2001
The Hyundai Castrol World Rally Team announced today that Germany’s Armin Schwarz, co-driven by countryman Manfred
Hiemer, will join Freddy Loix in contesting all fourteen events of the FIA World Rally Championship alongside Juha
Kankkunen who will undertake the nine gravel events during the 2002 season.
As Germany’s top rally driver, former European Champion Schwarz brings a wealth of experience to the team. Having spent
the last three and half years developing Skoda’s top-level rally car, his input has brought the Octavia WRC on greatly,
and Schwarz is looking forward to the new challenge of furthering the development process of the equally competitive
Hyundai Accent WRC².
“I am very pleased to be able to make a commitment to Hyundai for the next two years. I am very keen to test, develop
and compete in the Accent – it has good potential and I believe I can get a good result quite quickly,” commented
Schwarz. “We have had a good fight with the Hyundai’s this season, all setting competitive times, but I am confident I
can improve my results in 2002. My aim is simply to get the best result possible for Hyundai.”
