THE 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE AMERICA’S CUP WILL BRING TOGETHER THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SAILING YACHTS AND THE AND HISTORICAL PERSONALITIES OF THE CUP
Press Release – 16th August 2001
The Team Alinghi will be taking part in the ceremonies and the racing of the America’s Cup Jubilee from 18th August.
The Jubilee celebrates the 150th anniversary of the first America’s Cup, which was raced around the Isle of Wight in England in 1851. From 18th to 25th August, the 200 most beautiful classic and modern racing yachts in the world will come together.
Team Alinghi will be represented by Ernesto Bertarelli, Russell Coutts and Michel Bonnefous, together with 13 members of the Sailing Team. The team will be taking part in the International 12m Class racing on board « South Australia », a yacht which was built for the 1987 edition of the America’s Cup in Fremantle (Australia). The International 12 m Class yachts raced against each other in the America’s Cup until 1983. On the occasion of the Jubilee, an exceptional 36 strong fleet will be present in the Solent (the stretch of water separating the Isle of Wight from Great Britain).
“I am looking forward to taking part in this historic event”, said Russell Coutts, winner of the last two America’s Cup. “The amazing list of entries illustrates the interest for this competition throughout history.”
After the Jubilee, Team Alinghi will return to their appointed places of summer residence, be it Genève, Vevey or Sète in the Mediterranean, until the end of September. Then ‘Alinghi’, the training yacht will be loaded up onto a cargo vessel Auckland bound, to be followed one month later by the first of its racing yachts along with the Team Alinghi members.
