Commonwealth Games On One
TVNZ Chief Executive Rick Ellis and Manchester Games CEO David Leather have signed an agreement which gives TV ONE the
exclusive rights to screen the Manchester 2002 Commonwealth Games in New Zealand.
The Commonwealth Games will be held in Manchester in July/August next year and will involve 17 different sports. The
Games will bring together more than 5,250 athletes and officials from 72 nations.
TV ONE will provide extensive live coverage and highlights packages of the Games. The final broadcast schedule is still
to be determined.
Head of TV ONE, Shaun Brown said TV ONE is pleased to continue its association with one of the best sporting events in
the world.
"Once again, we are delighted to be able to bring the excitement of New Zealand's top athletes competing against the
best athletes in the Commonwealth to the New Zealand viewing audience free to air."
Manchester 2002 will be the 11th Commonwealth Games that TVNZ has provided coverage for with the 1966 Games in Trinidad
and Tobago being the first covered.
During the Manchester Games TVNZ will also be extending the multi-channel service developed by TVNZ Satellite Services
during the Sydney Olympics. This will allow TVNZ to provide a multi-channel service to several other Commonwealth
broadcasters including South Africa and part of Asia.
