Four new major art and visual culture exhibitions will open at Te Papa on October 17, as a result of the Greater Te Papa
Project redevelopment. This project will add over 1500 square meters of additional gallery space to Te Papa, and will
give visitors easier access to exhibitions.
The four new exhibitions, consisting largely of works from Te Papa’s collections, are Sightlines, Masquerade, Made in
New Zealand, and an exhibition of ceramics and sculpture.
Sightlines: looking into the art collections presents eight dramatic views of Te Papa's art collections. Organised
around the strong sightlines of the new gallery spaces, the eight sections of the exhibition are defined by major,
iconic works.
Masquerade is an object-rich exhibition that explores romance and courtship. It also offers glimpses of the courting
behaviour of humans and other creatures.
Made in New Zealand replaces the old Parade exhibition, and traces the stories of New Zealand’s distinctive visual and
material culture.
The redeveloped Aorangi Room on Level 6 will showcase works from Te Papa’s collection of New Zealand and international
ceramics. Another new addition to Level 6 is the magnificent roof terrace, which will be open to the public for the
first time. This outdoor space will house sculpture, and offer panoramic views of Wellington’s waterfront.
Te Aka Matua Te Papa Library and Information Centre was the first area to open as part of the 4.7 million dollar Greater
Te Papa project. Other areas that have opened as a result of the projects are Eyelights, containing Fashion Now and More
in Store. Images – Te Papa’s image library, and the Inspiration Centre Discovery Centre have also recently reopened in
new venues as a result of the project.
The new galleries on Level 5 housing Sightlines and Masquerade will be officially opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth
II on Wednesday 17 October.
