A Bit About The DJ's:
Leo Q:
Leo started DJing 4 years ago in late 1997. Since then he has played at numerous parties around Wellington and Auckland including Ministry, Zeal and Baciois Currently a resident at Paradiso and Vespa lounge. Currently an Auckland resident (as in he lives there), he is down in Wellington for the 18th to rock the House for us. Leo's musical style is House with a definite emphasis on the dancefloor vibe.
Philippa (BPM Records, Auckland):
Philippa began buying House records in the first days of 1997 after hearing Wellington Djs Andee (one of Flipside's co-founders) and Schmoo (Bradley Shanks - OG DJ) play the back room at the Hardfloor gig new year 96/97.
She then moved up to Auckland towards the end of 1997 and started to work for Bpm Records - arguably NZ's best and longest standing dance vinyl store....
In 1998, she was voted in by Re:mix magazine readers as Auckland's best up and coming DJ.
At the start of 2000, Philippa was asked to mix a CD for Re:mix magazine - the end result was a slickly mixed House compilation that went down extremely well around the country.
Philippa was a resident in notorious Auckland House club Calibre in it's best years and in 2000 won a place in the RedBull Dj Music Academy.
The prize was being flown to Dublin for a 2 week seminar with some of the music industries greatest influences. Upon arriving back in NZ she was voted in as NZ's best up and coming DJ at the B-Net music awards.
Philippa is in demand around Auckland's 8 or so house clubs every weekend, as well as being booked extensively to play other centres aside from Auckland such as : Wellington!
Leon D:
Leon D has a colourful and varied musical background, and originally started his musical career as a rocker (playing Guitar) for the successful Wellington band Fat Mannequin.
He eventually became bored with rock and turned his ear to electronic music as a producer in 1997.
Drum 'n Bass was initially his preferred musical genre but then he saw the light and started DJing (House music) late in 1998.
Leon D is (perhaps obvious to some) one half of 'Cuffy & Leon D' - Wellington's premier House Music Producers and a duo that is fast shaping up to be Wellington's House invasion both around the country and around the globe with 2 vinyl releases to date (Freq Records and Kog Transmissions), tracks on several compilation CD's to date and an impending international vinyl release on Kogs House imprint Reliable Recordings.
Currently a StudioNine & Q resident, he has been co-host of the Radioactive 89FM Housing project with Cuffy since the beginning of 2000 and has been doing radio shows with Radioactive for the last two and a half years.
He is currently the manager of the Wellington Rockshop and doubles as their resident Hi-Tech specialist.
Leon D will be treating the dancefloor to some unreleased 'Cuffy & Leon D' tunes as a special treat...
