AUSTRALIAN BEER CONSUMPTION FELL IN FY2001

STELLA ARTOIS TO LAUNCH BRANDED BARS

IN BEER'S NEW WORLD, THE NEWS IS GOOD AND BAD
by Michael Jackson
The Bad News - 'This is a new round of takeovers, on an unprecedented scale. The big brewers all now see their market as being the world' The Good News - 'While the big guys try with mixed fortunes to create worldwide brands, the most truly international reputations now attend a coterie of products from very small brewers' http://www.beerhunter.com/documents/19133-001567.html
BEER OFFERED AS BOUNTY FOR MAGPIES
Hunters are handing over dead magpies in exchange for jugs of beer at a Te Anau bar. Clint Tauri, owner of The Moose Cafe and Bar in Te Anau, was alarmed by attacks on Fiordland's native birds and decided to reward his customers with a free beer every time they brought in a dead magpie. Since the start of May he had given away more than 200 jugs http://www.stuff.co.nz/inl/index/0,1008,874452a1640,FF.html
WHAT'S IN A NAME? By Geoff Griggs
Following on from AroMac and Blonde Mac, the iconic Nelson brewery - these days under the guiding hand of Lion Breweries - has just released the third in its series of limited-release beers. Peated Malt Mac is named after its most unusual ingredient, a peat-dried malt similar to those employed by Scottish whisky distillers. At 6%, the beer is clearly intended as a winter warmer. Peated Malt Mac beer pours a reddish copper colour with a head that dissipates quickly; the aroma is of sweet fruity esters and hops, with a whiff of smokiness. Rich in the mouth (but not as full bodied as the label suggests), the palate is bittersweet with toasty, smoky notes followed by a hint of sweetish, spirity alcohol and fruit. The finish is long, mouth filling and fruity, with plenty of alcoholic warmth and hops. www.realbeer.co.nz/library/authors/griggs-g/200107whatsinaname.html

FOR PEAT'S SAKE by Carl Hadler
Whisky and beer are brothers due to this common base ingredient, and therefore it doesn't seem too outrageous an idea to make a beer with peated malt. Saying that, I haven't heard of it being done before and I was pleasantly surprised when Macs released their peated malt beer. http://www.stuff.co.nz/inl/index/0,1008,870433a3683,FF.html
