American Express Signs Contract With America's Cup 2003
Auckland, July 9, 2001 - American Express has signed a contract with Team New Zealand and the America's Cup 2003 organisation, to become a key sponsor of the America's Cup Event in 2003.
Under the agreement, announced today, American Express will receive naming rights for the American Express Viaduct Harbour, Home of the America's Cup Regatta.
Anna Hynes, Country Manager American Express International (NZ), Inc. said the company intends to promote the American Express Viaduct Harbour as both a domestic and international tourist destination and will be directly involved in many events leading up to the next America's Cup Regatta in 2002/3. American Express will also explore other marketing opportunities that will contribute to the Cup Defence.
"We are delighted to be part of the team that will make the America's Cup 2003 event a great success. We are already working closely with parties involved in the American Express Viaduct Harbour, particularly Team New Zealand, Viaduct Harbour Holdings Ltd, Auckland City and the other stakeholders to create a great event and help New Zealand defend the America's Cup," she said.
American Express sponsored the New Zealand Cup Village during America's Cup 2000. The sponsorship commitment for America's Cup 2003 signals American Express' commitment to growing its business in New Zealand and building brand awareness in the market.

"American Express appreciates the benefits of promoting the venue of the world's most prestigious sailing event as a desirable tourist destination," said Mr Blackman. "As the largest travel agency in the world, they are an ideal sponsor for New Zealand's most successful tourist attraction."
Mayor of Auckland City, Chris Fletcher says the eyes of the world will once again be on Auckland's downtown harbour in 2003, for the Louis Vuitton Cup and the America's Cup. "We've built a good reputation and raised expectations so it is important that we continue to do it well! We appreciate the significant contribution that American Express is making in promoting and supporting tourism in New Zealand, particularly through their ongoing support for the America's Cup. We are looking forward to another fabulous America's Cup event."
