Trade Me Enters Online Dating Market

Published: Wed 20 Jun 2001 11:00 AM
Trade Me today announced a partnership with FindSomeone.co.nz – one of New Zealand’s leading online dating sites. Trade Me is New Zealand’s largest online auction site and has one of the largest and most active online communities with 50,000 registered members.
Find Someone a New Zealand-owned dating website, recently registered its 3,500th member and, with over 2 million page views each month, now rates within the top 30 trafficked sites in New Zealand.
“We are registering up to 500 new members each week”, says 27-year-old FindSomeone founder, Nigel Stanford. “With the Trade Me partnership we are expecting these numbers to lift significantly”.
Find Someone is focused on the New Zealand market and in providing New Zealanders with an alternative to the large U.S. sites and low volume, free local sites. “We have always been moving towards a sustainable charging model that will position us above the free dating and chat sites – we now feel we have sufficient numbers and sustainable growth to start that journey”, Mr Stanford says.
“Our market is serious daters that don’t have the time or inclination to use a traditional offline dating agency.” Stanford says. “Overseas experience has shown this to be one of the few online services, together with online auctions, that web users are prepared to pay for.”
Trade Me Managing Director, Sam Morgan, says he is “looking forward to introducing the 50,000 Trade Me members to a new service that exhibits the same characteristics that has made Trade Me successful.”
“We feel the online dating space fits well with our low maintenance sustainable business model and view FindSomeone as the up and coming leader in the online dating market.” Morgan says. “We are one of the few sites who have managed to transition to a successful charging model and are looking forward to using that experience and adding FindSomeone to our online community.”
FindSomeone will be integrated into the Trade Me site in the coming weeks and, based on trials to date, should see see significantly increased visitor numbers and registrations as a result.
