Free events to end Telecom Prospect 2001

Tingle the eardrums and expand the mind with the freshest and most dynamic weekend of art events this year, marking the
final weekend of Telecom Prospect 2001 - New Art New Zealand.
The stimulation begins on Friday night (29 June) with the gallery doors staying open until 8pm, and sound event 'art
POP!' kicking off at 7.30pm. This event crosses the line between contemporary art and popular music. On Saturday, it's
time for 'The Prospector', an explanatory tour of journeys taken in the exhibition by curator Lara Strongman. Then
wrapping up the exhibition is a panel discussion The Art of Living on Sunday, with Prospect artists and artlovers,
including Miranda Harcourt and Gretchen Albrecht.
"We're looking at how our artists are as influenced by what they see and hear as their contemporaries, and how they
interact with innovators in fields like fashion, advertising and education," says Mark Amery, co-ordinator of the
series.
A focus is artists who combine their 'art-making' with a range of other activities. Hannah and Aaron Beehre, whose
bizarre stuffed badger and fish are popular exhibits in Prospect, feature in Friday night's artPOP! concert. As well as
being artists, they are part of acclaimed Christchurch pop band Pine, which takes to the floor with fellow Prospect
artists Sean Kerr and Terry Urbahn. Bar and live entertainment from 7.30pm.
On Saturday, meet 'The Prospector': curator Lara Strongman leads a tour of the exhibition. From skydiving in the
Wairarapa to photographing Auckland street signs in the dead of night, she will examine how contemporary art, life and
culture are inextricably linked. Sat 30 June, 2pm. The Art of Living on Sunday Prospect 2001 artists and art-lovers
alike talk about the role of contemporary art in their lives. Hear painter Gretchen Albrecht on art as a way of living;
thespian Miranda Harcourt on living with art; artist and fashion store proprietor Kirsty Gregg on art in fashion;
advertising creative director Howard Grieve on fashions and fishing; and teacher and artist Phil Price on thinking
through art in education. Sunday 1 July, 2pm, East Gallery.
