Auckland Names Arts Reps For Creative NZ Funding Pilot
An attempt to get councils in the Auckland region to make the best use of their arts and cultural funding has come a step closer with the formation of a regional arts pilot team, co-ordinated by Auckland City.
Lorraine Wilson, of the Avondale Community Board, and Ngarimo Ellis, both members of Auckland City’s Creative Communities Committee, have been named as the city’s representatives on the Regional Strengths Strategy Committee, part of a national arts funding strategy by Creative New Zealand.
The new strategy is designed to generate co-operation between local authorities who share significant arts and cultural capital, but who have not previously been able to work together to maximise the benefits of their individual resources in a collective manner.
The chairperson of Auckland City Council’s Community Development Committee, Councillor Penny Sefuiva, said the purpose of the pilot project was to work co-operatively across the boundaries of the region’s councils to support a regional arts and culture infrastructure. A report to Creative New Zealand is required by December.
“Auckland has frequently received applications from regional arts groups based in Auckland City and this places huge pressure on limited funds,” said Councillor Sefuiva.
“The pilot offers an opportunity to resolve those issues and is another way in which the individual financial strength of each council can be used in a collective way to achieve more for the arts and culture in the region.”
Auckland City is the host agency co-ordinating the project for the region.
