Young & Hungry is an arts organisation committed to giving young people ages 15-25 the opportunity to produce professional theatre. Over 100 young people are involved with every aspect of the productions (marketing, sound, lights, set, costumes, production management) with the support of experienced mentors in each area of technical production.
The plays commissioned for the 2001 season are:
The Mayfly
Written by Jackie van Beek Directed by Conrad Newport
Fight or flight, the decision is hers. Dun is half mayfly, half human. She lives at home with her mother and father, she spends most of her time with her dog Woofie, she is falling in love with her boyfriend Cha Chi. She is growing up. She is growing out of her skin. But if she becomes an adult she will have only one day to live. Abducted by trout, she wakes up in their lab at the bottom of the lake. She has to make a decision cut off her wings and live an average life, or fly for just one day.
Butter Loving
Written by Francie Maclean Directed by Erolia Ifopo
Home is where the herd is. Which of the three South girls, April, May or June, will take over the family dairy farm? Butter Loving is a comedy about parental expectations, growing up, matchmaking and gumboots.
Shootout
Written by Ryan McFadyen Directed by James Hadley
Pretentious theatre gets its just desserts. It¹s opening night for the highly anticipated new play from a hot young playwright. Everyone who is anyone is there government officials, TV stars, producers, critics but when the lights go down and the curtain goes up, the real action happens in the audience. Joined by a trio of tripping teen-agers and a lovesick woman with a kilo of dynamite strapped to her stomach, the Theatre Pavlova literally becomes a ticking time bomb when everyone realises that the play they¹ve been looking forward to for so long is absolute crap. And it cost $250,000.
