The Temple - Aucklands Live Original Music Venue has always supported original NZ music and is now this city's only dedicated original live music venue. Every week, over 30 acts tread the well-seasoned stage floorboards purveying everything from punk to pop to poetry. There are regular open mic nights, experimental spokenword evenings, a weekly ezine and a huge national and international network of communication and support for musicians and other artists. Plus the Temple website attracts over 25,000 unique visitors per annum.
Temple owner and manager Karen q Temple has designed a philosophy with the shared commitment of a few steadfast artists who share the same vision which has taken the Temple from just a building that houses live music to an entire and unique village of opportunities, information and networks.
The Temple provides a raft of opportunities and support including promotion, workshops, information sharing and networking. We encourage participation and relationship building; amongst and between artforms and disciplines. The Temple is responsible for many many working relationships. Recent successes in this area include: performances at both First Night 2000 and First Night 2001, Pasifika 2001, Music in Parks. The Celebration of Performing Arts, TV2 International Laugh! Festival and the Hero Festival, the multitude of bands members we have helped get together, mentoring relationships, tuition, radio interviews, and other services eg photography, filming, recording to mention but a few.
The Temple welcomes and fully supports any form of self expression from solo acoustic, to electronica, to fully plugged bands, to spokenword, to hip hop, to experimental music, to comedy, to artwork. Although music is the Temple's main arena, we also provide performance / exhibition space for comedians, actors, poets, and visual artists.
The Temple is the Industry Pulse Detector and centre of a huge information network; receiving, researching and relaying information about all aspects of the music industry: from performance and work opportunities, to radio and TV information, internet information, advice on many different aspects of the industry, gig information at the Temple and other venues, information on venues, events and festivals, APRA reminders, workshop and tuition info both at the Temple and other places, and funding advice and reminders. This is largely facilitated by our weekly ezine and monthly newsletter - the Temple Rag.
Currently all these services are funded entirely by Karen q Temple, even though they are not revenue generating, hence the necessity for fundraising to cover equipment maintenance and replacement, all of which is provided to the performers generally free of cost. Recently this has included the purchase of a new mixing desk at considerable expense.
16 June will see the Temple feature names like Graham Brazier of kiwi rock legends Hello Sailor, guitar Diva Karen Hunter, Sue Gray & Trigg, Gaille Tinihau, Roy g Biv, Derek Browne, Poet Michael Rudd, and Johnny Spacific, Games Master Derek Judge, Hosted by Chelle & Mit Frenzy at a fundraising extravaganza aptly named the Sound Gallery.
