Grind and Flipside once again team up to bring you the latest in cutting edge sounds direct from the UK underground. Steppin’Up, now occuring monthly, is Wellingtons premiere 2 Step/UK Garage session. This time we welcome Auckland 2 step specialist Jason Howson.
Jason Howson is one of the pioneers of the burgeoning UK Garage/ 2 step scene in New Zealand. A founding member of the Silk Cuts Crew, weekly resident at both Hookie at the Grand Circle and Cream Of The Crop at Cause Celebre, along with the monthly Silk Cuts night at Fu Bar and co-host of 'Silk Cuts In Session' on George FM.
When UK Garage exploded in '97, Howson's position as record buyer for Truetone Records allowed him access to the sounds he had been waiting to hear. A pilgrimage to the UK in '98 enabled Howson to experience the full effect of UK Garage with visits to Liberty at the Coliseum, Xcitement at the Gass Club, Bliss at the End and others. Witnessing DJ's EZ & Mystic Matt, the London Dreem Team, the Click and ultimately a spot alongside the Bubblin' Crew on pirate station Time FM confirmed his belief that Garage was the new sound of the urban underground.
His return to the Auckland scene saw the birth of Silk Cuts with DJ Sean Lyons. Silk Cuts. 2000 was when the momentum began to take hold, with the 2 Steps to Heaven series at Khuja Lounge, and the MJ Cole & Artful Dodger release parties. As 2 Step Garage went worldwide, the Silk Cuts Crew finally caught their wave. Hookie and Livin' Lick, soon to become Cream Of The Crop, and Splore 2001 only cemented Howson's standing, whilst bringing Garage & 2 Step to a whole new clued up and dedicated crowd.
